Introduction

The University of New South Wales (UNSW), with its main campus located in Sydney - one of the world’s great cities, is one of the leading teaching and research universities in Australia, with over 40,000 students, including over 8,800 international students from over 120 countries. In fact, UNSW has been ranked in 2005 by the Times Higher Education Supplement as Australia's top Technological University (more details in the news). UNSW is a foundation member of the Group of Eight leading research universities in Australia and the Universitas 21 international consortium. More about UNSW ...

The UNSW Faculty of Engineering is the largest and most diverse of its type in Australia. It offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Surveying and Spatial Information Systems, Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications, Computer Science and Engineering, Mining Engineering, Civil & Environmental Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Industrial Chemistry, Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, and Photovoltaic Engineering. More about the Faculty of Engineering can be found here.

The School of Surveying & Spatial Information Systems (SSIS) has world-class research capabilities across a wide range of surveying and geospatial disciplines with particular expertise on GPS, remote sensing and photogrammetry, GIS, and high-precision deformation monitoring. More about the SSIS can be found here.

Postgraduate Study Opportunities in Surveying and Spatial Information Systems Research at UNSW

We are looking for special people to undertake exciting GPS, remote sensing and photogrammetry, GIS, and high-precision deformation monitoring research within the School of Surveying & Spatial Information Systems at the University of New South Wales, Sydney. Why not do a PhD or Masters Degree with us?

Staff and students are engaged in research and development into precise GPS (static & kinematic) navigation and positioning, remote sensing, photogrammetry, and GIS, as well as surveying and geodesy. Recent research topics include,

Most of its research projects are funded by the Australian Research Council (ARC) and the Cooperative Research Centre for Spatial Information, while others are being undertaken in collaboration with government agencies, industry and international partners.

Are you:

We are looking for postgraduate students with the appropriate qualities and skills to join our researchg group. Expertise and qualifications in any of the following: surveying, spatial information systems, electrical engineering, computer science, computer engineering, mining engineering, mathematics and physics, are especially sought.

There are two steps:

(1) Enrol for the postgraduate program (application process), in order to be made an "offer" of a place. Click  here to see more on how to apply.

Scholarships for Australian Citizens or Permanent Residents

If you are an Australian citizen or Permanent Resident there are two/ three general scholarships available through the following schemes:

(a) Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) and University Postgraduate Awards (UPA),
(b) the UNSW Faculty of Engineering Research Scholarship, and
(c) the Women in Engineering Research Scholarship

Approximately 160 awards were allocated every year. The value of the scholarship ranges up to AUD$32,000 per year (most of which is tax exempt) if a "top-up" allowance is offered in exchange for performing undergraduate teaching support. As a guide, your undergraduate degree should have been granted at the Honours 1 level. Information on these, and other more targeted scholarships, can be found on the UNSW scholarship web site.
