Message from the Head of School
The School of Surveying & Spatial Information Systems (originally
the School of Surveying, and then the School of Geomatic Engineering)
has one of the oldest programs in the Faculty of Engineering.
The Faculty of Engineering is the largest in Australia and is
committed to offering the best undergraduate education in all
engineering disciplines, appropriately specialised postgraduate
courses, productive and stimulating research opportunities and
continuing education opportunities for engineers in the workforce.
The Faculty comprises nine Schools (namely, the Schools of Biomedical
Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Industrial Chemistry, Civil
and Environmental Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering,
Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications, Mechanical and
Manufacturing Engineering, Mining Engineering, Petroleum Engineering,
and Surveying and Spatial Information Systems) and is associated
with 13 research centres. It is also a partner in 11 major Cooperative
Research Centres. For further information on the Faculty of Engineering,
visit the faculty's website.
The School of located on the UNSW Kensington
Campus.
The University of New South Wales (UNSW) was established in 1949.
At the main campus in Kensington, six kilometres south-east of
the centre of Sydney, there are the Faculties of Arts and Social
Sciences, the Built Environment, Commerce and Economics, Engineering,
Law, Medicine, and Science, together with the Australian Graduate
School of Management (AGSM). The College of Fine Arts of the University
of New South Wales is located in the inner Sydney suburb of Paddington.
A University College of the University of New South Wales, located
within the Australian Defence Force Academy in Canberra, provides
tertiary education for officer cadets and officers of three services
of the Australian Defence Force and postgraduate education and
research for military personnel and civilians. For further information
visit the UNSW website.
The School currently offers one undergraduate program leading
to the award of the Bachelor of Engineering in Surveying & SIS.
The program traces its history back to the Bachelor of Surveying,
BSurv, which was introduced in 1957. There are also combined programs
leading to the award of the BE in combination with BSc and BA
degrees. The School is proud of its record of achievement; its
graduates are leaders in industry, government and academic circles.
It has forged strong links with leading research and teaching
institutions in North America, Europe and Asia, and members of
the SchoolÕs staff hold positions of leadership in both international
and national scientific and professional bodies. The School is
one of only two departments of surveying/geomatics in the so-called
ÒGo8Ó (research-intensive) universities, the Dept. of Geomatics
at the University of Melbourne being the only other one.
In addition to teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students,
the School has an active research program. Excellence in research
output, in terms of graduate students and publications, has been
an important part of the School's ethos from the very start. Our
strong research profile have given the School a strong reputation,
both nationally and internationally. Although in the past the
School's research projects have covered all the major disciplines
of Surveying, and in particular Geodesy, the School now has Australia's
largest concentration of academic R&D in wireless, ground-based
and satellite-based positioning technology and applications within
the Satellite Navigation
and Positioning (SNAP) Laboratory. Although the primary focus
is Global Navigation Satellite Systems such as GPS, the School
also has active research projects in inertial navigation systems,
pseudolites, mobilephone positioning, and integrated navigation
and imaging systems, and plays a significant role in the Co-operative
Research Centre for Spatial Information.
