Your Account

  • School computer accounts are normally set up automatically for all registered students and should be usable by the beginning of each session. However, if you do not have an account check with the Laboratory Manager. The login name is a lower-case "z" followed by your student number. You should change your password on first login.
  • User accounts do NOT become active until the student has completed a sign-on procedure to indicate acceptance of the terms and conditions listed here.
  • All users are responsible for their own accounts. Passwords should not be made available to anyone. Also, it is important to choose a password you can remember easily, as resetting passwords is an inconvenient process. Passwords may be changed by users at any time.
  • Users should log-out before leaving the lab.
  • In addition to the School's sign-on procedure, every student will also need to go through a similar process provided by the Communications Unit of the Division of Information Services. Once the "Agree to the Rules" process is complete, the student will have access to their official UNSW e-mail account and to the University Dial Up Service (UDUS) modem pool.

Code of Conduct and Rules

Security

Access to the Laboratory requires your student card to be validated by UNSW Security for use on the Cardax swipe card system. Do not tamper with the Cardax security lock on the door. If you are enrolled in a course from the School you should have access. If not, a form can be obtained from the School Office or the Laboratory Manager. The form must be signed by Leon Daras (School Office) or the Lab Manager and taken to Security (in the Red Centre building).

Email and Internet Access

  • The laboratory is currently connected to the University Network and to the Internet. Every enrolled student has email on the university mail server, which can be accessed if you have your UNIPASS and UNIPIN. For further information check the Disconnect website.
  • Access is provided to the Internet and World Wide Web for bone fide university work. Be aware that providing access to the Web is monitored, does cost money and the privilege can be revooooked if abused.
  • There is limited storage available for files, so downloading of data should be kept to a minimum. The Lab Manager may remove excessively large files from the system without warning.

Printing

Students should follow the described printing procedures for payment for the use of the laser printer, A3 and A0 plotters.

Backups and Archives

  • Every user is responsible for backing up their own work.
  • There is no recovery mechanism for accidental deletion of files.
  • Nightly backups are not performed on the system. There may be backups performed at unspecified intervals. For information see the Lab Manager.

Rules and Conditions of Use

All users of School of Surveying & Spatial Information Systems Laboratories are bound by University rules and specifically the following School rules.

Conditions of Use - UNSW ICT Resources
https://wombos.unsw.edu.au/agreement/index.shtml

Users will be liable to disciplinary action for any misuse of Computing Facilities and/or resources. An infringement notice will be issued for any breaches of the rules and the account disabled. Marks for courses may be withheld for serious offences.

Do not abuse the laboratory.

Behaviour

  • No food or drink is permitted in the lab.
  • No smoking in any university building.
  • Displaying pornographic or offensive material is forbidden.
  • Downloading unauthorised software is forbidden.
  • Harassment of lab users will be treated as a serious matter.
  • A user cannot occupy more than one computer at a time.
  • You are NOT allowed to plug your own computer into the network. The University scans the system continuously and charges the School a high fee for each new connection, no matter how short the connection time is.
  • It is a criminal offence to steal anything from the laboratory.
  • Loud and disruptive behaviour is forbidden.
  • Altering any settings of any equipment without approval from the Laboratory Manager is forbidden.
  • Sending nuisance, junk or offensive email is forbidden.

After Hours Access

  • Students are permitted to use the lab after hours provided each such student has swiped their ID card to enter the lab.
  • Letting others into the room after hours with your security card is not permitted.
  • Students who use the lab after hours must have a mobile phone with them in case of emergency.
  • In accordance with UNSW OH&S guidelines, students are advised not to be in the lab after hours on their own. Be accompanied by at least one other person.
  • After hours parties are NOT allowed in the lab. It would be a shame to have to ban all student access to the computers after hours, because of the irresponsible actions of a few.

Problems

All accidents and any other problems must be reported the laboratory manager promptly.
