This website was created for the undergraduate thesis, titled"Spatial Data Standard for the World Wide Web", in the School of Surveying and Spatial Information Systems, University of New South Wales, Australia.  A web page summary of this thesis is available here.

This website is powered by a new vector graphics called SVG (Scalable Vector Graphic).  If you cannot view the graphic below, please install Adobe SVG Viewer.  To learn more about SVG, go to the Adobe and other SVG related websites.

This prototype was produced with the open source script provided at Carto.net.  You can go to Carto.net for further information.

The website should look like the figure below. (Click on the image to enlarge it.)

This website supports the following functions (on PCs running Windows; not all features seem to be supported on Macintosh computers (ed)):

* Selective Display of Geographic Features
You can select and deselect layer(s) on the map by checking and un-checking the relevant check boxes on the right of the map.

* Zooming
Zooming can be performed in two ways. With a right click of the mouse button, a menu opens. Zooming in or zooming out can be selected; the map will zoom-in/out in a preset scale. Three steps of zooming in or out are starting from the original view.   The second method defines a zooming-in window: press the 'control' key on the keyboard, and use the left mouse button to draw a box over the desired area.

* Panning
You can pan the map to a desired position by holding the 'Alt' key on the keyboard and using the right mouse button to move the map.

* Basic Queries
There are two ways to query information and features in the prototype. The first method is to search the text that is in the SVG by a left click of the mouse button and select “Find in SVG”. After entering the text and clicking “Find Next”, the nominated text is highlight on the SVG. The second approach uses the query form. After clicking the “search” button, a query window appears. Select a theme (layer), fields or/and a Boolean operation (equal or other than). After a click of the query button, the selected feature will show as the only feature of the same feature layer. The feature can be deselect after the “clear” button is clicked.

* Display of Attributes
Attributes, that relate to a selected feature, can be display in two ways. The first method is by clicking on the feature using a left button on the mous. The related information (the name,the area in square metres and the perimeter in metres) of the selected feature isthen displayed on the bottom right hand corner of the browser. The second approach is by placing the mouse cursor over a feature: the name of the feature displayed in the text box that is located below the map.  NOTE:  Netscape user may have the attribute window display as a pop-up.

* Other Options
Right click the mouse button over the SVG map and select options such as copy/view SVG and view source.
