1 June 2006 -- At a (surprise!) ceremony at Wuhan University,
Chris Rizos was made an Honorary Professor of Wuhan University.
Wuhan University is China's 4th ranked university, and has a long
and illustrious history as a seat of teaching & research in Surveying/Geodesy/Geomatics.
Prior to 2000, Wuhan University was comprised of several smaller
universities, including the Wuhan Technical University of Surveying
& Mapping (WTUSM). WTUSM had the largest student body anywhere
in the world in the surveying/geomatics disciplines. This tradition
continues at Wuhan University. (The President being an ex-academic
from WTUSM.)
This is a rare honour, as the School of Surveying
& Spatial Information Systems now has two honorary professors
of Wuhan University: Chris Rizos and Emeritus Professor (& former
HoS) John Trinder. Two of the current staff of the School are
also in fact WTUSM alumni: Dr. Jinling Wang and Dr. Linlin Ge.
The School continues to work closely with researchers and academics
at Wuhan University.

20 March 2006 -- MoU signed with Wuhan University
A visit by Prof Jingnan Liu, President of Wuhan
University, P.R. China, afforded UNSW an opportunity to renew
its Memorandum of Understanding with this prestigious university.
Wuhan University was formed from a merger of several universities
in the city of Wuhan, including the world famous Wuhan Technical
University of Surveying & mapping (WTUSM). The School has
had a close relationship with the former WTUSM, having welcomed
a number of postgraduate students who have subsequently gone on
to complete their PhDs at UNSW. These include Linlin Ge, Shaowei
Han and Liwen Dai. Emeritus Prof. John Trinder, a former Head
of the School, is also an emeritus professor of WTUSM. A MoU with
WTUSM had long expired, and this visit by Prof. Liu was an ideal
opportunity to renew links with this important university and
its worldclass surveying and geodesy schools.
