Graduate Study Opportunities in GPS & wireless positioning research at UNSW

We are looking for special people to undertake exciting GPS and wireless positioning research within the School of Surveying & Spatial Information Systems at the University of New South Wales, Sydney. Why not do a PhD with us?

The following academic staff have projects within the School: Prof. Chris Rizos, Dr. Andrew Dempster, Dr. Jinling Wang, Dr. Linlin Ge, Dr. Samsung Lim, Dr. Craig Roberts.

The Satellite Navigation and Positioning Laboratory is organised along the lines of four major themes:

Staff and students have important roles to play in the Cooperative Research Centre for Spatial Information.

Staff and students are engaged in research and development into precise GPS (static & kinematic) positioning for navigation, surveying and geodesy, as well as navigation technologies and applications in general using a variety of sensor technologies. Most of its research projects are funded by the Australian Research Council (ARC), while others are being undertaken in collaboration with industry and international partners.

Are you:

  • Passionate about GPS and the world of precise navigation?
  • Prepared to work hard and make an impact as a researcher in a rapidly developing field?
  • Skilled in software development, electronics, mathematics, statistics or geodesy?
  • Keen to work within a team, and perhaps in collaboration with outside partners?
  • Articulate, ambitious and/or possessing of a forward-looking and confident personality?

Do you think you fit the bill? We are looking for postgraduate students with the appropriate qualities and skills to join our research group. Expertise and qualifications in any of the following: computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, mathematics and physics; is especially sought.

There are two steps:

(1) Enrol for the PhD or Masters of Engineering program (application process), in order to be made an "offer" of a place.

(2) Scholarship support (if student is not self-funded), for either Australian citizens/permanent residents or International students (see below).

Go to the UNSW Graduate Research School web site for further information.

Scholarships for Australian Citizens or Permanent Residents

If you are an Australian citizen or Permanent Resident there are two general scholarships available through the following schemes:

(a) Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) (application deadline end October each year) and,
(b) the UNSW Faculty of Engineering Research Scholarship (application deadline twice a year).

The value of the scholarship ranges up to AUD$25,000 per year (most of which is tax exempt) if a "top-up" allowance is offered in exchange for performing undergraduate teaching support. As a guide, your undergraduate degree should have been granted at the Honours 1 level. Information on these, and other more targetted scholarships, can be found on the UNSW scholarship web site, and the UNSW Graduate Research School.

URGENT: ARC-funded scholarships for Australian Citizens or Permanent Residents ...

Scholarships for International Students

If you are a citizen of another country the procedure is as follows. Each year The University of New South Wales allocates approximately 15 Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (EIPRS) and University International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (UIPRS) to the Faculty of Engineering. Application deadline is at the end of April (for mid-year entry to the current year) or end of August (for commencement in the following year). This scholarship covers tutition costs and provides a living allowance of approximately AUD$18,000 per year. The EIPRS/UIPRS scheme is VERY competitive and hence only the very best students need apply.

Visit the UNSW Graduate Research School web site for information on scholarships.

Please be aware of the Faculty's English language requirements.
