GPS
Made Easy : Using Global Positioning Systems in the Outdoors
by Lawrence Letham
Paperback 244
pages 3rd edition (February 2001)
Mountaineers Books;
ISBN: 0898868025 ; Dimensions (in inches): 0.51 x 8.47 x 5.50
Review
This is a great intro book for the novice
looking to understand more about GPS. It is a good start for someone
wanting to purchase their first GPS receiver, or someone who already
has a receiver but wants to learn more about it. The info is presented
in a clear, logical way, but it tends to be a bit basic for more
advanced users. The book gives general discriptions, but not a lot
of detail. For instance, it does not explain that low-cost consumer
receivers are not compatible with post processing. The compilation
of commercial receivers is a bit dated, but most of the rest of
the book is still very topical.

All
About GPS : Sherlock Holmes' Guide to the Global Positioning System
by Jerry Huang
Paperback
152 pages (August 1999)
Acme Services; ISBN:
9579738971
Review
This is a great, short introduction to
GPS which is easy to read and understand and yet covers the essentials
of GPS operation in a fun and interesting way. The author discusses
a lot of scientific history and discoveries along the way to make
it even more than just a GPS book. It should be inspiring to anyone
with an interest in science and technology. The Sherlock Holmes
story adds to the flavor of the book. As another brillant detective
(and reviewer) deduced, the author's native language is not English
and thus they are many grammatical errors but this does not take
away much from the technical value of this book. As a GPS navigation
systems engineer, I would highly recommend it to anyone with an
interest in how GPS really works.
