REVIEW QUESTIONS & ACTIVITIES
Demonstrate how a Pseudo-Random Noise (PRN) code sequence can be generated
by the use of an example. Compare the P-code algorithm and the C/A-code
algorithm.
Why is the GPS signal so "complicated"? Discuss each point
in your argument.
Discuss the accuracy of the broadcast satellite clock error model,
both in the absence and in the presence of SA.
Describe in detail the contents of the Navigation Message. Comment
on what parts are specific to the transmitting satellite, and those that
are not.
How do the GPS ranging codes convey the message "... the time
is ..."? How is the satellite-antenna distance derived using the PRN
codes?
Why is the measured satellite-antenna distance referred to as a pseudo-range?
Why is the measurement noise so different for P-code, C/A-code and
carrier phase measurements?
Using appropriate analogies, explain how the integrated carrier phase
measurement is constructed within a receiver. What is its geometric meaning?
Why is it so useful for GPS surveying?
Explain why the carrier phase observations are often referred to as
carrier beat phase observations. Does this matter from the mathematical
point of view?
Connect to as many GPS information sources that are accessible via
the Internet WWW and describe the type of information that can be obtained.
