The Satellite Navigation & Positioning (SNAP) group
within the School of Surveying &
Spatial Information Systems, The University
of New South Wales, since the early 1990s has established itself as
the premier academic GPS research and development group in Australia.
For many years the SNAP group has been the largest within the School of
Surveying & SIS, in the last few years totalling over 20 staff
and graduate students.
During 2004 some dramatic changes have occurred in the staffing
of the School of Surveying & SIS. The following academic staff have
been appointed: Dr. Andrew Dempster
(Assoc. Prof.), Dr. Jinling Wang
(Senior Lecturer), Dr. Linlin Ge
(Senior Lecturer), Dr. Samsung Lim
(Senior Lecturer), Dr. Craig Roberts
(Lecturer). These join several Research Associates: Dr. Joel
Barnes and Dr. Yong Li (CRC-funded);
as well as the founder of the SNAP group, Prof. Chris
Rizos (Head of School since 12 July 2004).
Hence the SNAP group has evolved from being a large number
of graduate students supervised by one or two academic staff, to the current
situation where almost all of the academic/research staff of the School
of Surveying & SIS have research interests in the general field of
"Satellite and Wireless Positioning". The
SNAP web site is maintained as a portal for information on all
activities of the Satellite Navigation and Positioning Laboratory,
which is now organised along the lines of four major themes:
Several staff have important roles to play in the Cooperative
Research Centre for Spatial Information.
