The Satellite Navigation & Positioning (SNAP) group within the School of Surveying & Spatial Information Systems, The University of New South Wales, since the early 1990s has established itself as the premier academic GPS research and development group in Australia. For many years the SNAP group has been the largest within the School of Surveying & SIS.

In mid-2004, upon the appointment of Prof. Chris Rizos as its Head, some dramatic changes occurred in the staffing of the School of Surveying & SIS. The School currently consists of the following academic staff: Dr. Andrew Dempster (Assoc. Prof.), Dr. Jinling Wang (Assoc. Prof.), Dr. Linlin Ge (Assoc. Prof.), Dr. Samsung Lim (Senior Lecturer), Dr. Craig Roberts (Senior Lecturer). The current Research Associates and Research Assistants are: Dr. Yong Li, Dr. Binghao Li, Dr. Michael Chang, Dr. Weidong Ding, Dr. Eamonn Glennon, Mr. Peter Mumford, Mr. Nonie Politi, Mr. Mukesh Vyas.

The SNAP group has evolved from being a large number of graduate students supervised by one or two academic staff, to the current situation where almost all of the academic/research staff of the School of Surveying & SIS have research interests in the general fields of "Navigation" and "Earth Observation", or "NEO" for short. This SNAP web site is maintained as a portal for information on all activities of the former Satellite Navigation and Positioning Laboratory, which is now organised according to several major themes:

A weekly Staff-Student Development Seminar series is a forum for researchers to present their work, in the form of progress reports, research proposals (by new PG students) or practice conference papers.

Other news:

  • The School was a "Silver Sponsor" of the FIG International Congress, Sydney, Australia, 11-16 April.
  • From the start of 2010, A/Prof Andrew Dempster has been appointed Director of Postgraduate Research within the Faculty of Engineering.
  • Andrew Dempster, an ARC-Discovery grant application: "Decentralized Emergency Evacuation Management – Robust Guidance by Local Spatial Intelligence", with Univ. of Melbourne the lead university. Submitted to the ARC in March.
  • 26 February we learned that our ASRP application was unsuccessful. However, another application headed by RMIT, in which we were a junior partner, was successful! 
  • 2 March we were informed that the SNAP-designed "Namuru" GNSS receiver was successfully launched by the German Space Agency (DLR) on a sounding rocket. As far as we know, this is the first Australian GPS/GNSS receiver launched into space. See YouTube of launch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kyhKTRb1YsM. Click for story here...
  • The School has been selected as an analysis centre for the APREF (Asia-Pacific Reference Frame) project, and delivered its first results to Geoscience Australia on 29 March.
  • 10 papers authored or co-authored by School staff, visitors or students have been accepted for oral presentation or as poster alternates for the 23rd International Technical Meeting of the Satellite Division of the US Institute of Navigation, ION-GNSS2010, Portland, Oregan, 21-24 September, including one student prizewinner.
  • 10-19 May: The School hosted a delegation of 17 workshop participants from State Bureaus of Surveying & Mapping from provinces around China.
  • Andrew Dempster, an ASRP grant application: "Earth Environment Monitoring Using Formation Flying SAR", with Curtin Univ. of Technology, and a number of industry partners. Submitted to the ASRP in May. This was successful.

  • On the 14th of July the Australian Space Research Program granted $4,664,583 for the “SAR Formation Flying” project. When in-kind contributions are taken into account, the project is worth over $9.6million. The consortium is led by Associate Professor Andrew Dempster, with contributions from Professor Chris Rizos and Associate Professor Linlin Ge (UNSW). Collaborators from other universities are Professor Peter Teunissen of Curtin University of Technology (Perth) and Associate Professor Sandra Verhagen of Delft University of Technology (Netherlands); and investigators from industrial partners are Mr David Hall and Mr Martin Cohen from Astrium Limited (UK), Dr Ian Tuohy from BAE Systems (Adelaide) and Mr Kevin Parkinson of General Dynamics (New Zealand).   • 14 October: Official opening of LIME (Laboratory for Imaging in the Mining Environment), a joint initiative of SSIS and the School of Mining Engineering.

Visitors

  • 11-17 January: Dr. Junping Chen, Project Scientist at the GFZ (GeoForschungsZentrum) Potsdam, Germany, visits to discuss developments in geodesy, especially real-time GNSS applications.
  • 5 February: The School farewelled our visitor Prof. Peter Raemy, returning to Bern, Switzerland.
  • 15-22 February: Prof. Ali Ahmed ElSagheer Soliman, Head of the Dept. of Surveying, Benha University, Cairo, Egypt, visited the School and had discussions with Chris Rizos, John Trinder and Linlin Ge.
  • 4 March: The School farewelled Songlai (Stuart) Han, a CSC-funded visiting PhD student, who had been working for 24 months with Jinling Wang on GPS/INS integration research.
  • 22 March: The School welcomed Arne Tarara, a practicum student from the Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany, for a 5 month visit to work on FPGA research.
  • 25 March: The School welcomed A/Prof Yonghong Cao, North University of China, Taiyuan, China, who will stay for one year. His research interests are  modelling and integration of inertial sensors with GNSS.
  • 25 March: The School welcomed Changhui (Charles) Xu, a CSC-funded visiting student for 2 years, who will be researching RAIM algorithms with Jinling Wang.
  • 26 March: The School welcomed Prof Wei Wang, Defence University of Technology and Science, Changsha, China, who will stay for one year. His research areas are GNSS constellation simulations and GNSS integrity monitoring.
  • 3 April: The School farewelled Lily Qiao, a CSC-funded visiting PhD student, who had been working for 18 months with Samsung Lim and Chris Rizos.
  • 9 April: The School welcomed Lukasz Bonenberg, a PhD student from the Univ. of Nottingham (UK), for an 8 week visit to work with researchers & PG students on the Locata technology. His departure date was 3 June.
  • 31 May: The School farewelled Ms. Stesha Doku, a Fulbright Scholar, after a 1 year visit during which she worked on 
    assessing the spatial epidemiology of trauma injuries to understand patterns of injury and enhance health service delivery, with a primary focus on spatial comparison of Australian-born vs immigrant injury rates.
  • 25 July: The School welcomed Dr. Oscar Colombo for a 4 week visit to collaborate with SSIS researchers and LPMA surveyors on the topic of long-range kinematic GPS positioning. His departure date was 22 August.
  • 2 August: The School welcomed Mr. Shiraz Latif, Mehran Univ. of Engineering & Technology (Pakistan), for 6 months as an Endeavour Fellow, to work with Dr. Binghao Li on indoor positioning methods.
  • 2 September: The School farewelled Chen (Honesty) Xing, a CSC-funded visiting student for 1 year, who had been working with Jinling Wang.
  • 18 October: The School welcomed Mr. Wei Li, a CSC-funded visiting student from Northwestern Polytechnical University for 2 years, who will be working with Jinling Wang.
  • 19 October: The School welcomed Juan Shi, a CSC-funded visiting student from Wuhan University for 2 years, who will be working with Jinling Wang.

  • 23-31 January: Jasmin Kim attended a workshop on the use of the "Bernese Software", in Bern, Switzerland.
  • 9 February: The School welcomed Ms Xun Li into the PhD program, to undertake research with A/Prof Jinling Wang.
  • 12 February: Anthony Cole submitted his PhD thesis for examination and has taken up a position with Leica Geosystems in Heerbrugg, Switzerland.
  • 22-26 February: PhD student Kevin Parkinson visited the School to discuss future plans for the next version of the "Namuru" UNSW GNSS receiver.
  • 1 March: Jasmin Kim discontinued her PhD studies.
  • 1 March: The School welcomed Ms Yiping Jiang and Ms Yuanyuan (Judy) Zhang into the PhD program, and Mr Wenyang Liu into the ME program, to undertake research with A/Prof Jinling Wang.
  • 28-30 April: PhD student Kevin Parkinson visited the School to discuss his research. Again on 24-28 August.
  • 3-5 May: Ali Al-Shaery attended the 5th Int. Navigation Conf. - Melaha 2010, Cairo, Egypt, and gave one presentation.
  • 4-6 May: Nagaraj S. attended the IEEE PLANS 2010, Indian Wells, California, USA, and made two presentations. Then following week he visited the Dept. of Aerospace Eng. & Science, Univ. of Colorado, to undertake some experiments with Prof. Dennis Akos and his research team.
  • 27 May: Jinghui Wu has won a 3 month postdoctoral writing fellowship from the Faculty of Engineering.

  • 28-30 January: Chris Rizos attended the Humboldt Conference in Dunedin, New Zealand, and made one presentation.
  • 1-4 February: Samsung Lim visited the Faculty of Geoinformation Science & Eng., University of Technology Malaysia, Johor Bahru, Malaysia, to discuss collaborative research, and made two presentations.
  • 1 February: The School welcomed Eamonn Glennon (a former PhD student, and former employee of the company SigNav) as a new Research Fellow, to work with Chris Rizos and Andrew Dempster on a range of GNSS receiver design projects.
  • 15-17 February: Chris Rizos attended a workshop on "VLBI & GNSS: NZ & Australian Perpectives", in Auckland (NZ) and made one presentation on 15 February. On 17 February Chris visited Land Information New Zealan (LINZ), in Wellington, and made a presentation.

  • 11-16 April: The School was well represented at the XXIVth FIG International Congress, held at the Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre, with staff or students of the School authoring or co-authoring 16 papers.
  • 1-3 May: Chris Rizos attended the IAG's Executive Committee meeting, and the meeting of the GGOS Steering Committee in Vienna, Austria, as well as visiting the UN's Office of Outer Space Affairs.
  • 11-14 May: Nonie Politi visited the Ohio State University to conduct experiments with colleagues on GPS/INS integration.
  • 13-14 May: Jinling Wang, accompanied by PGR student Nathan Knight, visited Prof Peter Teunissen and his group at the GNSS Research Centre, Curtin Univ. of Technology, Perth.
  • 17-19 May: Chris Rizos was an invited participant at the workshop on "New Research Directions for the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA)", in Washington D.C.
  • 26 May - 4 June: Andrew Dempster attended the IEEE Int. Symp. on Circuits & Systems, Paris, France, chairing a session and made one presentations. He also visited colleagues at ENAC, in Toulouse.
  • 7-12 June: Craig Roberts and PGR student Richard Stanaway attended the IAG School on Reference Frames, Lesbos, Greece.

  • 25-29 June: Jinling Wang attended the Int. Conf. on Electrical & Control Engineering, Wuhan, P.R. China, and gave a keynote address, as well as making two other conference presentations. Jinling also visited Wuhan University for discussions with staff and students.
  • 27 June - 4 July: Chris Rizos attended the IGS Governing Board meeting on 27 June, participated in the IGS Workshop, Newcastle, U.K., 28 June - 2 July. Chris also represented the IAG at the 100th anniversary celebrations of the establishment of the ISPRS, Vienna, Austria, 4 July.
  • 1 July: The School welcomed Mr. Mukesh Vyas as a Research Assistant, to work on a one year project with Dr. Samsung Lim.
  • 7 July: Chris Rizos was a presenter at the Australian Earth Sciences Convention, Canberra, Australia.
  • 12-14 July: Chris Rizos and Jean Li attended the 5th World Congress on Structural Control & Monitoring, Tokyo, Japan, and made two presentations. They also visited the Tokyo Polytechnic University for discussions with research collaborators.
  • 16-17 July: Chris Rizos and Craig Roberts participated in a GNSS CORS National  Conference in Jogjakarta, Indonesia, where Chris gave a keynote presentation. They also presented talks at the Geodetic Department, Gadjah Mada University. An MoU was signed between SSIS and the Geodetic Department GMU.
  • 25-30 July: Samsung Lim and graduate students Alex Hu and Eugene Yu participated in the IEEE Int. Symp. on Geoscience & Remote Sensing (IGARSS2009), Honolulu, Hawaii, USA, where 6 presentations made.
  • 17-19 August: Chris Rizos attended the annual face-to-face meeting of the ICSM's Geodesy Technical Sub-Committee in Wellington, New Zealand.
  • 18-20 August: Linlin Ge participated at the Symp. of the 'Chinese Professionals in GPS' (CPGPS), Shanghai, P.R. China, where he chaired two sessions.
  • 6-10 September: Craig Roberts attended a workshop on the use of the "Bernese Software", in Bern, Switzerland.
  • 6-10 September: Linlin Ge ran a Radar Remote Sensing short course at UNSW.
  • 13-17 September: Chris Rizos attended the Int. Conf. on Indoor Positioning & Indoor Navigation, Zurich, Switzerland, and made two presentations. UNSW will be hosting the 2012 Int. Conf. on IPIN. He also visited the EPFL, in Lausanne, for discussions with research collaborators.
  • 13-17 September: Linlin Ge, Samsung Lim, John Trinder and two postgraduate students attended the 15th Australian Remote Sensing & Photogrammetry Conf., Alice Springs, Australia, where a total of 9 presentations were made.
  • 21-24 September: Andrew Dempster, Jinling Wang, Linlin Ge, and student Yong King Tan attended the 23rd Int. Tech. Meeting of the Satellite Division of the U.S. Inst. of Navigation, Portland, Oregan, USA, where a total of 8 presentations involved SSIS staff and students.
  • 24 September: Samsung Lim was promoted to Associate Professor, effective from 1 January 2011.
  • 27-29 September: Chris Rizos attended the 10th Australian Space Science Conf., Brisbane, Australia, and made two presentations. Linlin Ge made 4 presentations, and two of his students made one presentation each.
  • 1-30 October: Yong Li visited six universities in China, several aerospace companies and institutes in China & Taiwan, and attended the China Int. Symp. on Inertial Technology & Navigation, Nanjing, P.R. China, 18-20 October, where he made one presentation.
  • 4-6 October: Samsung Lim attended the Int. Symp. On Benefiting From Earth Observation, Kathmandu, Nepal, and made one presentation.
  • 6-7 October: Linlin Ge attended the "Spatial@gov" conference, Canberra, Australia, and made one presentation.
  • 14 October: Linlin Ge attended the opening of the Laboratory for Imaging in the Mining Environment (LIME), as Co-Director of LIME.
  • 14-28 October: Chris Rizos was keynote speaker at the seminar on 14 October to mark the 125th anniverdsay of the founding of the Dept. of Surveying & Mapping Malaysia, in Kuala Lumpur. He also made a presentation to students & staff of the University Technology Mara on 15 October. Chris also participated in the 5th Meeting of the U.N. International Committee on GNSS, Turin, Italy, 17-22 October. Chris chaired the ABLOS Business Meeting and attended the biannual ABLOS Conference, Monaco, 25-28 October.

  • 26-28 October: Andrew Dempster, Jinling Wang, Yong Li, and students Yong King Tan attended the Int. Symp. on GPS/GNSS, Taipei, Taiwan, where 10 presentations were made.
  • 2 November: The School welcomed Ms. Azadeh Farjad as a Research Assistant, to work with Dr. Samsung Lim on his ARC-L project.
